Gift category #1:
Land and Animals: Projects in Sustainability
#1 Renting a piece of Land: $2,500 for 5 years.
We are one year deep in our efforts to run Second Mile Haiti in the most sustainable way possible. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned it’s that growing food is totally hard, but totally worth it! We’ve also learned that in terms of crops, beans and corn give us the most bang for our buck. We live in a region where corn, and several varieties of beans can grow all year long; this past year we enjoyed two bountiful harvests! What do we do with the goods, you ask? Corn and beans are Haitian staple foods which means they can be served several times a week to the employees and the mothers. This keeps our food budget tremendously low. Additionally, we grind the corn which supplements a nutritionally balanced chicken feed and surplus beans are sold to neighbors of Second Mile. The local community benefits through access to an affordable local source of beans for 1) planting 2) food or 3) resale in other markets. How will more land help? More beans, more corn, more harvests each year! And less strain on Second Mile Haiti’s general and food budgets.
5 2 pregnant cows. $750/cow
Cows: Did you know that Second Mile has six cows? We use our cow milk daily to make enriched milk to support kids in their recovery from malnutrition. All excess milk is sold. However, only 2 of these cows are at an age and a stage where they can be milked. In 2014, we would like to purchase 5 additional pregnant cows, so that we will always have access to fresh milk for use and for sale. Future projects include making cheese and yogurt to sell to local markets.
Need: 5 one-time gifts of $750
150 83 chickens. $20/each chicken.
Chickens and eggs have been a successful business venture for Second Mile. As of right now we are producing 420 eggs each week. We are selling these eggs at profit to local businesses, NGOs, and our ex-pat friends. Second Mile’s eggs are in high demand since 90% of eggs in Haiti are imported from the Dominican Republic. People are obsessed with having nutritious local eggs. A gift of $20 provides for the purchase of 1 chicken (maintenance costs included, e.g. vaccinations, feed for 3 months, and building costs for chicken coop). $3,000 buys 150 Haiti-born chickens for Second Mile Haiti.
Need: $3000 or $20/chicken
#4 Turkeys: 10 Turkeys. $37.50/turkey
Did you know that many Haitians prefer turkey meat to chicken? We would like to dip our hands in raising turkeys in 2014.
$375 or 10 gifts of $37.50 COMPLETELY FUNDED!
Gift Category #2
Employees: Our greatest investment
#1 Employee Appreciation: Employee Christmas Gifts: $150
The employees are the backbone of this ministry. We want to doubly bless them this year. $150 provides a sack of rice, oil, and a Christmas treat.
Need: $2,250 or
15 13 gifts of $150
#2 Big Budget Item: Present and Future Employment
Our absolute worst fear is not being able to pay our employees the salary they deserve, or worse, having to let some of our staff go. Hopefully, through your help, profits from our sustainability projects, and strategic fundraising, we will be able to stay ahead of the game. 2014 employee salaries are budgeted at $8,270/month for a total of 60% of Second Mile Haiti’s total budget. We would love nothing more than to raise at least 10% of that total through this Holiday Catalog. A gift of any amount will be subtracted from this total.
Gift category: #3
Orphan Prevention: Support a sister in need
#1 Empower a mother: $200
When a mom comes into our facility, our goals are to: meet the immediate needs of the malnourished child, be a source of love and support for the mom, and to help the family find long term solutions to meet their basic needs. In 2014 Second Mile estimates that we will help at least 50 women through our empowerment and recovery programs.
It only costs about $200 for a mom and her child to stay at Second Mile Haiti during the child’s recovery from illness and malnutrition. $125 is the amount we invest in the mom for her to start a business. $50 goes towards the food that she and her children eat at our facility. $10 goes towards transportation fees. And $15 covers health related expenses including transportation to hospital appointments.
50 44 gifts of $200
Gift category #4
Health: Meet a child’s immediate health need
#1 Box of Medika Mamba: $69
Medika Mamba is RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food) made from roasted peanuts, powdered milk, sugar, oil, vitamins, and minerals. This product, resembles peanut butter and is specially formulated to give malnourished children the highest possible chance of survival. We purchase Mamba through a local NGO, Meds and Foods for Kids (MFK) that is working to produce this life-saving product with Haitian-grown peanuts. MFK employs local moms and dads to produce Medika Mamba in their factory in Cap Haitien. Additionally, they invest in local farmers by teaching them to produce safer peanuts and purchasing their harvests. This gift saves lives and supports Haitian farmers and local employment. We’ve witnessed amazing success with this product.
47 34 gifts of $69
#2 Medicine: $100/month
12 10 gifts of $100
#3 Medical Equiptment: Total: $580
Medical professionals, this might be the perfect gift area for you! Treatment for malnutrition is pretty straight-forward but there are a few diagnostic tools that would certainly help us better assess and monitor the children and mothers that come into our care. For just $580 we can purchase a Hemoglobinometer (to test for anemia), a pulse oximeter (to check oxygen status), and 30 malaria tests! We want the best for these children and part of that is fast and accurate diagnostics, and the ability to know when to refer to higher levels of care.
Hemoglobinometer (machine + 100 test kits): $250
Pulse Oximeter (with infant and pediatric probes): $300
30 Malaria test kits: $30
Total gifts needed: $250, $300, $30
Gift category #5
Transportation: How we roll…
#1 Truck repairs: $4,500
Second Mile currently has two means of transportation, the amazing (but slightly beat up) 2009 Ford Ranger and Jenn’s motorcycle. Our 2009 Ford Ranger is in need of some serious engine-related repairs. Currently it is not drivable.
$4500 for truck repairs COMPLETELY FUNDED
#2 Organization Motorcyle: $3,500
Jenn’s motorcycle serves many functions. In addition to the transportation of moms and babies to and from their homes and hospital appointments, it’s used for weekly errands and follow-up visits to families living as far as 30 minutes away. It’s Jenn’s mode of transportation to and from home each day. Second Mile wants to invest in a second motorcycle to increase our impact and efficiency.
Gift category #6
@ the project: Miscellaneous needs
#1 Camera: Nikon 5100 (per recommendation)
This is not an item we want to put on our needs list. But, since this is a “gift catalog” we thought, why not? In our modern, social-media driven world, a quality camera would make our jobs much easier. We think it’s important to portray Second Mile Haiti in the best light, part of that means showing supporters how their gifts are making a difference in the lives of people touched by Second Mile. At this time we hope to invest in a camera that will serve us for several years of daily use.
$650 COMPLETELY FUNDED!
#2 Refrigerator and deep-freezer: For the goat, cow, and turkey meat that will need to be preserved for employees and moms to eat. Sorry vegetarians.
Gift category #7
Second Mile Haiti needs monthly donors. Currently we have 22 monthly donors. Next year will be our 2nd year as a fully operational facility. As such, we will be investing even more into employment and programs to empower families than we did in 2013. We would love to see the number of monthly donors rise from 22 to 50! Monthly donations, regardless of the amount, make things happen. Monthly donors, you encourage us by your committed support!
